New Harmony Food Pantry
The New Harmony Food Pantry was started in the early 90's by two St. Stephen's parishioners at the request of the Rector. It served a few families each month and was not affiliated with the Tri-State Food Bank or any other agency at that time. In 2010 the New Harmony Food Pantry served 696 families or 1848 individuals. We are funded by the United Way of Posey County, The Blaffer Foundation, The Posey County Community Foundation , Partners in Food and many Churches and individuals. We also purchase food through the Tri-State Food Bank and receive commodities from that agency. Each family receives between 25 to 50 pounds of food each month depending on the size of the family. There are usually about 20 volunteers on any given day. Some work upstairs and sign the folks in, help them with their selection sheets, issue a milk voucher in the clients name and have them sign the register for each visit. Others pass out extra items to be given that day. The folks downstairs fill the order sheets as they come down to them and the scouts and their parents take the food upstairs to the clients. Many of our clients are elderly or have some kind of a disability, so the scouts and or their parents help them to their vehicle with their groceries. Volunteers are needed on the third Thursday of the month from about 3:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. The food pantry is located at the First Baptist Church at the corner of Tavern and First Streets in New Harmony. Volunteers are needed on the first Wednesday of each month from 9:00 a.m. until about 11:00 a.m. to help unload and sort the delivery. Bags of food items are filled at this time also for the number of families that we expect to attend the next give away. If you would like to volunteer call Mary Ellen Gerard at 812-682-4077, or Phyllis Westfall at 812-682-4888.
