A SAFE PLACE FOR ALL TO LOVE, LEARN, AND LIVE THE WORD OF GOD

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Dear St. Stephen’s Family and Friends,

The months have flown by since I started working with your beloved community. While it is true I wish I could spend more time with you, I do cherish the Sundays we are together. During my recent trip to Portugal and Spain, I was able to spend time with new communities nearly every night as I stayed primarily in albergues/hostels. These are shared living spaces usually with bunk beds, shared bathrooms and showers. Sometimes, the people eat together, and often we would talk in the community spaces and share parts of our stories. These communities changed every night with people gathered from all parts of the world to do one of the pilgrimages that lead to Santiago. Some people walked alone, like myself, some walked with a spouse, partner or friend, and some walked in bigger groups or families. Those that choose to receive a certification at the Cathedral in Santiago must say that they are doing the journey for spiritual reasons. I was able to receive this certification as I walked the miles and got stamps along the way. The beauty of the coast and sea and the people I encountered were awe inspiring. The communities I was part of for short periods of time reminded me of the church community of St. Stephen’s and the greater New Harmony area. The spiritual feeling and elements were palpable just as they are in New Harmony. Some people noted to me that many who do this journey are actually in professional and vocational careers focused on service and care to others, such as teaching, nursing, chaplains, etc….Of course, these are careers like most, where one gives so much; it is necessary to refill ones’ own cup to be able to continue to help others. I hope each of you are finding ways to refill yourselves. I know most of you do so much for your families, jobs, and community that it is possible to forget that you, too, must take care of yourselves and seek help from others at times.

While I have had the opportunity to speak to many of you in small groups and individually, I do want to know all of you better and what you feel the needs or hopes of the church community are moving forward. I also would love to hear your stories, your journeys, and what brought you to St. Stephen’s and the Episcopal Church. I am happy to arrange zoom meetings with you or schedule a time in person the Saturday before I come for worship. I would also encourage you to set up a time to speak with me either by zoom or when I come once a month if you have pastoral concerns that you would like to discuss with a priest. While I know our time together is short, as I normally only come once a month, I am here to serve you and be your priest. I always leave St. Stephen’s feeling nourished and fed and I am honored to be part of your beloved community.

Pax,

Mother Mary, MM
